Symbolism
of waters in Veda -
Sukarma Pal Singh Tomar (Thesis accepted by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, 1995) Ahi happens to be classified in vedic glossary under the synonyms for
water, and also under the synonyms for stages/pada. The qualities of Ahi/serpent
are similar to demon Vritra, Shambara etc. Ahi becomes a barrier for flow of
waters. It becomes difficult to differentiate the qualities of demon Shambara
and Ahi. Qualities of Ahi can be understood on the basis of three gradations of qualities
. In it’s relatively pious form, it is called Shambara, one who fills with
tranquility. In mixed form, it has been called an energized Ahi. At gross level,
it is dark one.
